During welding operations, fumes pose an invisible threat to welders' health and present a significant challenge for regulatory compliance.
Processes such as MIG, TIG, Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and laser welding all generate harmful fumes—classified as Group 1 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Moland provides comprehensive, customized welding fume control solutions tailored to specific site conditions. By integrating fume capture, high-efficiency filtration, intelligent monitoring, and regulatory expertise, we create welding environments that are safe, productive, and energy-efficient.
I. Welding Fume Collection
Since welding processes, materials, and workspaces vary, Moland offers tailored fume collection methods based on actual site conditions:
Torch-Integrated Fume Collection – Fume extraction units are integrated directly into the welding torch to capture fumes at the source, preventing them from spreading into the operator's breathing zone or the surrounding workspace. This method is highly effective for manual welding and collaborative robot applications where stable positioning can be maintained. (Link to eco-friendly welding torch extraction case study)
Extraction Arm Type Fume Collection – Extraction arms feature 360-degree rotation and free-hovering capabilities, ensuring fumes are captured at or near the source. Welders can flexibly adjust the hood position based on the welding location, ensuring fumes are extracted before they disperse—preventing inhalation and spread throughout the workspace. (Link to cantilevered centralized extraction case study)

Suction Hood Type Fume Collection – In scenarios where source capture is difficult—such as robotic welding or welding large components—suction hoods enclose the process and extract fumes before they disperse. Moland customizes the appropriate hood size and type (fixed, rotating, telescopic, etc.) based on site conditions and designs optimal ductwork and dust collectors to ensure the entire system is rational, optimized, energy-efficient, and high-performing. (Link to centralized dust collection case studies using hoods)

Room Type Fume Collection—When a customer’s welding station is a fixed enclosure (such as for robotic welding), or when an enclosure is required based on client specifications and site conditions, Moland calculates the required vacuum port size based on the room's dimensions to ensure effective smoke and dust collection and prevent the room from becoming filled with smoke. (Link to centralized dust collection case studies using enclosures)

Blow-suction Fume Collection—For scenarios involving high-ceiling workshops, heavy workpieces, or complex conditions where source capture or localized control is impossible, the blow-suction collection and purification method allows for workshop-wide fume management. By creating a controlled circulating airflow through strategic duct layout, welding fumes are captured and routed to Moland’s dust collector for filtration. The filtered air is then returned to the workspace, enhancing protection while minimizing energy loss associated with exhausting treated air. Integration with Moland’s centralized monitoring system and Air Monitor ensures energy conservation, emission reduction, and regulatory compliance. II. Welding Fume Purification
Collecting welding fumes is merely the first step in fume management. Once collected, the fumes must be effectively purified to ensure emissions meet regulatory standards.
Whether your operations involve light manufacturing or high-volume automated production, Moland provides carefully tailored designs capable of handling the fine, complex particles generated during welding. From single-station mobile fume extractors to comprehensive workshop-wide centralized dust collection systems, we guarantee energy efficiency, high performance, and compliance with emission standards.
High-Efficiency Filtration
Welding fume particles are extremely fine—almost entirely smaller than 1 micron—requiring filters capable of capturing sub-micron particles.
Moland’s industrial dust collectors are equipped with imported filter cartridges (such as flame-retardant cartridges with Toray PTFE membranes from Japan or Ahlstrom nano-membranes from Italy), achieving a purification efficiency of up to 99.9% for 0.3-micron particles.
For highly toxic materials—such as those involved in stainless steel welding—safety-focused post-filters (including HEPA options) are available, particularly when air is recirculated within the workspace. To address odors, an optional activated carbon filter can be installed for odor adsorption.
Compliance with welding fume regulations and occupational exposure limits
Welding fume control systems are essential for meeting global occupational health and environmental regulations. Organizations such as OSHA (USA), the UK HSE (Health and Safety Executive), EU directives, and ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists) have established exposure limits for airborne hazardous pollutants.
Exposure limits vary by substance but are typically very low. For instance, the limit for total welding fume is generally around 1–5 mg/m³ (8-hour time-weighted average, TWA), whereas limits for specific toxic components—such as manganese—may range from 0.02 to 0.2 mg/m³, and the limit for hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) can be as low as 0.005 mg/m³ (5 µg/m³).
As requirements differ across regions and applications, companies should consult local regulations when designing fume control systems. Moland’s solutions help manufacturers ensure compliance by controlling exposure levels, maintaining safe air quality, and recording system performance data.
If you have requirements for workshop fume treatment, please contact Moland’s fume purification experts to discuss your specific needs and develop a customized dust collection solution. >>>
